The house was built by Sir Cuthbert Quilter between 1886 and 1910, during 1936 it became home to much of the early development of Radar by Robert Watson-Watt and his team after their move from Orfordness.
This near low tide view of the River Deben shows some of the shingle banks that cover completely at high tide. One of the Martello towers built to protect the entrance is visible on the point opposite. It is also possible on the skyline to see four of the large cranes at the eastern end of Felixstowe Docks.
